Plenty of writing competitions open now!

For me, a writing competition is a great motivator:
to write a new story
to finish a story I've started (deadlines are great!) or
to dust off and polish an old one.
And entering a competition can be a gateway to publication. At the moment there seem to be lots of competitions open. So go for it!

Previously unpublished stories between 2,000 and 6,000 words. All genres considered.
Flash fiction up to 100 words on the theme of “wild”.
Island - submissions close 9 March
New fiction and nonfiction content of approximately 1500 words. Looking for experimental and literary approaches to form and content.
Peter Carey Short Story Award - submissions close 16 March Short stories between 2000 - 3000 words.
Submit poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, scholarly articles and reviews.
The CYA Writers & Illustrators Conference runs several annual competitions for children's and young adult illustrators, published writers, aspiring writers and young writers.
Entry fee is $10, word limit 2,000 and the theme is ‘underground’.
Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Award - submissions close 24 April 2023 Stories between 2,000 and 5,000 words.
Submit previously unpublished stories up to 4,000 words.
Submit a work of fiction or narrative non-fiction up to 5,000 words that explores Australian life in all its diversity.
A piece of writing that takes place in the Swan River Colony during the 1840s, and includes John Gavin and/or reference to his trial. Word limits: up to 750 words for the open category; 500 words for the schools category.
Rhiza Edge Short Story Competition - submissions close May 2023
Diverging Worlds is a collection of short stories in steampunk or dystopian worlds suitable for 12+ readers
Publication opportunities
The School Magazine is open for submissions from writers, illustrators, comic serial creators and cartoonists. The editors are seeking quality children’s literature for ages 7-12+. Submit stories, plays, articles, persuasive texts or poetry.
Funds/scholarships
Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund is open to applications from emerging, midcareer and established Australian writers and literary sector workers. Applicants can apply for grants between $2,000 to $10,000.
Closing date for applications: Friday 14 April 2023.
