Borderland

The life of a sealer on the southern coastline of Australia

Some years ago I read book by Rebe Taylor called Unearthed which brought to light the plight of Aboriginal women who had been kidnapped and taken to Kangaroo Island (KI) to work as slaves for the lawless sealers who lived there in pre-colonial times.

I could not believe that I had never heard about this, so it became the seed for a Young Adult novel. It is no longer only about sealers on KI but about sealers who roamed the southern coastline from Bass Strait to King George Sound.

I was fortunate enough to receive a residency in Albany in January 2022 to work on this project.
