Bio
Hello there! I'm a writer.
I write Australian historical fiction, both short stories and novels.
I also facilitate writing workshops.
I get a real buzz from students who say at the beginning of a workshop that they are struggling to put words on paper, and walk out having written two or three scenes.
I also have 15 years experience as a communications professional in the arts, science, environmental and financial sectors. My passion is communicating complex information clearly. See what services I offer and some of my work.

Switching from fact to fiction
January 15, 2025
Although I still love copywriting and communications work, recently I've been writing fiction; short stories, a young adult novel and a children's picture book.
After a bit of a publication drought, I had two short stories published in 2024.
The first was 1831, a fictionalised account of Captain Collet Barker's death. Both the Mt Barkers in South Australia and Western Australia are named after him. A sad story but one I felt was worth bringing to light. This was published in Voices of the South anthology and is available through Amazon both as an ebook and paperback.
The second was Seeds of Life or Death?, a story about an amazing woman who few people have heard of. Georgiana Molloy, mother and wife of the local magistrate, fell into plant collecting in the South West of WA in the early 1800s. This found a home in Small Things published by Stringybark Press. Two of my other stories are published in earlier Stringybark publications, Golah Sing and Faultlines.

I can't believe that it's 12 months since I spent six amazing weeks at the Vancouver Art Centre in Albany (on the southern coast of Western Australia) as Artist in Residence.
I spent the entire time 'being an author', researching the history of sealing, visiting locations that sealers lived or are likely to have lived and of course beginning to write the first draft of my novel.
Twelve months on, I'd hoped that it would be a complete first draft, but life took some interesting twists and turns, so it's not there yet.
But I'm still working on it! I aim to write or edit for an hour a day, five days a week. Because to get it done, I know I have to show up consistently.
I hope your writing is going well.

I am very excited about being awarded a residency at Vancouver Arts Centre, Albany, Western Australia in 2022 as part of the AIR program. This will provide me with 6 weeks of research and writing time for my next novel, Ultima Thule (now entitled Borderland). I am looking forward to being co-hosted the Museum of the Great Southern and Albany Library.
I'm very grateful for the support of the City of Albany’s Vancouver Arts Centre and the State Government of WA, Lotterywest and Regional Arts WA.
